Blinchiki (pancake day for Maslenitsa)

This week is time to celebrate the beginning of spring and to say goodbye to winter – in Russia it is called Maslenitsa (similar to Shrovetide). The whole week long everybody is supposed to cook pancakes (blini in Russian), have fun, every day having its special meaning.

We also had a little pancake party in the office today – everybody brought home made pancackes (or blinchiki – which represent the sun by their round shape) and also some home-made jams, mmm yummy!

The culmination happens on Sunday when the dummy (made of straw and rags) of winter is burned to welcome spring. All this is beautifully brought to screen by Nikita Mikhalkov in his The Barber of Siberia
